What Is a Bitcoin Mixer? Tumblers & CoinJoin

What is a Bitcoin mixer, and how does it differ from Bitcoin CoinJoin? Compare custody, transaction construction and evidence before treating different privacy mechanisms as interchangeable.

Bitcoin mixers and tumblers, explained

A Bitcoin mixer is intended to make the relationship between incoming and outgoing bitcoin harder to follow. “Bitcoin tumbler” is often used for the same type of service. The term alone does not tell you who controls funds, how the system operates or which privacy assumptions apply.

Mixers vs CoinJoin vs privacy protocols

ModelWhat you are comparingMain question
Operator-run mixerA service accepting deposits and arranging outputsWhat custody and operator assumptions apply?
CoinJoin wallet or softwareParticipants collaborating on a transactionWho coordinates it, and which wallet and implementation are involved?
Smart-contract privacy systemA protocol with its own cryptographic and contract designWhat do the contracts, proofs and governance assume?

These are broad categories. Similar labels do not make every implementation equivalent or guarantee anonymity.

Why wallet and protocol names matter

Wasabi describes self-custodial wallet software and third-party coordination. The legacy JoinMarket client linked here is archived and no longer maintained; identify the exact implementation before comparing software. Read its archive record. Privacy Pools describes a different design involving commitments, association sets and exit mechanisms. Evaluate each system on its own documentation. What to look for in a mixer comparison

Check the exact service and domain, supported asset, custody model, percentage fee, fixed charge and amount limits. Distinguish a provider claim from a transaction observation. A working website or Tor address does not establish successful processing.

What about older services?

A familiar name can remain in circulation after an original service closes. Historical records belong beside their dates and original announcements. ChipMixer takedown announcement ↗; CryptoMixer shutdown announcement ↗.
